The Editor Speaks: Guns kill

No one can argue with that, except it takes someone to pull the trigger.

If it is very, very difficult to own a gun it automatically lowers the chances of someone being able to use an AR-15 rifle and go on a deadly rampage at a school.

That a 19 year old expelled student from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Miami, Florida, could do just that with a legally bought gun emphasises my point.

If if it as alleged that teachers at the school were emailed about the student’s ‘strange’ behaviour and did not notify the police then this makes the episode that happened yesterday (Feb 14) even more bewildering that it happened.

The ex student was expelled and, again according to Miami media reports, was not allowed back on the campus with a backpack.

So where was the security at the school?

Social media was not silent before this incident. The shooter had posed with guns.

And after over an hour the shooter, walked casually out of the school blending in with fellow students, the same way he had got in.

The most nauseating image I have from this horrific incident was during last night’s coverage by one of the Miami Broadcast stations. They showed a video taken from a smart phone of one of the children hiding that also had audio. We heard gun shots and children screaming. Why on earth would a television station broadcast this knowing that not all the parents of these children had found their children? It was callous, thoughtless and utterly disgraceful!

With criminal gangs here in the Cayman Islands seemingly able to acquire guns, albeit not semi- automatic rifles, it could happen here.

Every country has its crazies.

In the US, more than 400 people have been shot in over 200 school shootings. And the crazies love to mimic.

Even the Cayman Islands has its crazies. The unemployed. The ones with a grudge. The ones society shuns and doesn’t attempt to help.

The ones some of our churches don’t want to allow in, or if they do, the church members shun them. No welcoming mat and the reason, fear.

Let there be no relaxing restrictions on our own gun control. The US obsession with owning a gun must not be allowed to filter down here. It is now impossible to ban guns there. It’s written in their constitution. To protect themselves from people with guns. And it goes back to slavery.

Guns don’t hurt people, people hurt people.

If you don’t have guns ……..
