Hurricane Dorian makeup days announced for Brevard Schools

Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated the date for the makeup day. The date will be Feb. 17.

Brevard County students will only have to make up one of three days missed due to Hurricane Dorian.

Students will now have to attend school Monday, Feb. 17, according to the new calendar approved Tuesday by the School Board. The date was previously scheduled as a student holiday and professional development day for teachers.

Two additional days lost to the storm will be subsumed into the end of the fall semester, school district officials said, which has been extended from Wednesday, Jan. 8 to Friday, Jan. 10. That Friday remains an early release day.

The administrative change won't mean much for students and teachers, who were already scheduled to be in class those dates for the start of the spring semester, and would allow students to meet their state-required class time for that portion of the year, said district spokeswoman Nicki Hensley.

Spring semester will now officially begin Monday, Jan. 13.

The change will affect the timing of report cards for middle and high school students by a few days, Hensley said. Grades were originally scheduled to be issued Friday, Jan. 17, but will now be released Wednesday, Jan. 22. Elementary school report cards will not be affected.

All district employees, including teachers, support staff and administrators, will be paid for the missed days and will not have to make up the time, Hensley said. All employees who were not previously scheduled to work Feb. 17 will receive regular pay for that day as well.

All professional development activities originally scheduled for the make-up day will be moved to another date, Hensley said.
