NEWMARKET — Jamie Hayes saw his boys start right on time Friday night.

He would have loved to see that same level of focus in the second quarter, especially with an 18-point lead.

“That’s really the first time we’ve done it — we got complacent,” the longtime Newmarket High School boys basketball coach said. “Like, ‘All right, the game’s over, let’s relax a little bit.’ You could see it on both ends of the floor. So, hopefully lesson learned.”

The Mules took care of business in the second half by allowing just nine points defensively in a 60-27 win over Colebrook. Will Chase scored nine of his 20 points in the fourth quarter, and Logan Willey added 17 as Newmarket moved to 9-1 in Division IV.

“Everything starts with defense for us,” Hayes said. “Our depth, we don’t have to worry about foul trouble. … And then it’s just they’re unselfish. We’ll have possessions where all five guys will touch it, and sometimes we’re too unselfish; we pass up good shots. We have guys who can score outside, we have guys who attack the rim, we have guys who can post, we have guys who can hit mid-range.”

When everything’s clicking, the Mules are a load to stop. They outscored Colebook 24-6 in the first quarter Friday, with Willey dominating around the rim with 12 points.

Colebrook (5-4), to its credit, was able to weather the storm in the second quarter, outscoring the Mules 12-4. The score was 28-18 at halftime.

“Second quarter we settled a lot and we didn’t get a lot of uncontested shots,” Hayes said. “That’s how you score four points in a quarter.”

Newmarket got its offense kicking in the third quarter. Owen Hayes hit a 3-pointer, six separate players scored a bucket and the Mules led 46-24 entering the fourth. They outscored Colebrook 32-9 in the second half.

“They didn’t make shots, they had some turnovers, but they played hard,” Hayes said of the Mohawks. “They didn’t make it easy for us. We had to work for it.”

Stephen Braswell added eight points for Newmarket and Colby Bost chipped in five, including a first-quarter 3. The Mules scored 18 of their 22 buckets from inside the arch.

They travel to Farmington Monday.
