Macon Pride Week is back for second year

Pride Week was cancelled last year due to the pandemic.

MACON, Georgia(41NBC/WMGT)— Macon Pride Week has officially began Monday, with a week full of events.

Pride Week was cancelled last year due to the pandemic. But organizers say they’re hoping this year is better than the first.

“This week is a celebration of the LGBTQ community here in Macon Georgia and middle Georgia, I want people to know that they are loved and appreciated and celebrated here in Macon,” said Scott Mitchell, President of Macon Pride.

The Group was established in 2019 to help advance unity, visibility, and self-esteem within the LGBTQ plus community. Mitchell says since the group began, they’ve received a lot of support from the community.

“This year we have over 50 sponsors, which is just outstanding, we are so excited to welcome these amazing partners here in the city of Macon and across the state of Georgia that want this festival to succeed .We have had an outpouring of love that we never could have ever expected.”

The group partnered with Mercer University, Theatre Macon and Macon Little Theatre for Macon Pride Week.

“We thought that it was really important to shine a light on all of our brilliant and inclusive identities here in middle Georgia. We thought that pride and celebrating the LGBTQIA community was a great way to do that.” said Julia Rubens. Rubens is the Arts Marketing Director at Mercer University.

Organizers say they are looking forward to having fun with the community.
