Our education system has not fulfilled its goal: Nagesh
Mangaluru: “The education system, for the past 75 years in the country, has not achieved its prime goal. There are lacunae in many aspects, and the same can be bridged by the implementation of the National Education Policy-2020 from an early age,” said B C Nagesh, minister of primary and secondary education.
Nagesh was addressing the valedictory of the two-day seminar on National Education Policy-2020, organised by The Dakshina Kannada Pre-University Colleges Principal’s Association, in collaboration with Chanakya University, Vidya Bharathi and Shakthi PU College.
At the beginning of the seminar, he interacted with lecturers from PU colleges in the region.
Nagesh said that for the past 75 years, the stress was on getting educated for a job, and earning money, so that poverty is eliminated.
“Our education of the past has failed to address several issues. These days, the courts get more divorce cases than civil disputes. People in large numbers go to counsellors and psychiatrists for various therapies. The big houses are empty, and old age homes are full. When a person meets with an accident, onlookers, instead of providing help during the golden hour, start video recording the incident. We do not have educated persons to perform the right action. Hence, NEP-2020 will be a game changer,” he told the gathering.
Earlier, during the interaction, one of the PU lecturers asked whether NEP stressed on updating the knowledge of teaching faculty, and if the government will provide any training. In response, Nagesh said that teachers should have the urge to update themselves. Further, the government will also provide timely training, he said. Another lecturer queried the minister if NEP stresses on taking up competitive examinations, and the minister answered that there is scope under the NEP for the same.

To another question, on the arts and commerce PU section having practicals, Nagesh said that the main role of NEP is to bring in skill and practical oriented learning. “Practicals not just for science, but also for for arts and commerce streams is included in PU,” he stressed.
‘Kayyara lesson
not omitted’
Nagesh told reporters, that a lesson on Kayyara Kinhanna Rai, from the class VII social science textbook has not been omitted. A false allegation is being made.
Meanwhile, the textbook committee will add the lesson on social reformer Sri Narayana Guru in the class X social science textbook, which was removed earlier, he said.
