SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – People gathered in Springfield to celebrate and honor those who make a difference in early education and child care.

The recognition is part of Teacher Appreciation Week. Head Start staff were recognized at the Springfield Elks Pavilion for their ongoing commitment to the growth and success of children up to 5 years old in the Greater Springfield area. Through their tireless efforts inside the classroom, these educators work to perfect the foundation for their students’ future education and development.

“Since Covid, we have been struggling with a teacher shortage and so it’s really important that we lift all the important work that they are doing because it is helping children be ready for school, which can not be underestimated or undervalued because it is so important,” said Chief Executive Officer at Head Start, Nicole Blais.

As part of the event, two long-standing volunteers were also given a Head Start Hero award. The lucky awardees were twin sisters Theresa Grigg and Lillian Gagnon. They have been part of the Foster Grandparent Program in Chicopee classrooms since 2002. It allows area senior citizens to volunteer in Head Start classrooms to work with small groups of children, read stories, assist with art projects, and more.

When asked what they like most about working in the Head Start classrooms, Theresa said that she “loves singing with the children and helping with the various art projects.” Lillian stated that since she does not have children, “it is like they are my own.” Both Lillian and Theresa keep in touch with many of the families they have met over the years.

A few retired heroes were also recognized for their unwavering dedication to Head Start. Retired Hero Awards went to the following:

  • Millie Reyes, Head Start Cook for 23 years
  • Patrick Lewin, Head Start Bus driver for 22 years
  • Cindy Stoner, Head Start Bus driver for 19 years
  • Nara Sivalingan, Head Start Education Director

Officials said they will be recruiting more staff and increasing wages for the upcoming school year.
