The building of the new football ground project with an investment of approximately €14.3 million that will be enjoyed by the Naxxar students and community is going on at a fast pace, the Ministry for Sports and Education said.

The 9,800sqm 11-aside pitch will serve to complement pre-existing sports facilities in the Naxxar school cluster and provide 500 parking spaces, it said.

During a site visit, Minister for Education and Sport, Clifton Grima, said that this project will allow children in the locality to train safely in a pleasant environment and will fulfil another electoral promise.

"This investment is directly for our children. The project will cater to the needs of the Maltese educational system and the sporting aspect of the Naxxar Lions football club. During the day, these sporting facilities can be used by the students of local schools whilst after school hours, usage of the facilities will be maximised by the children of the club's nursery", Grima said.

Grima also mentioned the investment of €1 million on projects of sports grounds in schools aimed at bettering the sporting infrastructure in state schools for recreational purposes as well as raise the standard of sport education. He also mentioned the larger scale project of the Santa Lucija Secondary School within St Thomas More College which saw an investment of €4.6 million in a theatre/hall and sporting facilities.

The minister said that the infrastructural investment carried out in the sporting sector is unprecedented, one that not only is tied to national sporting facilities, but is also seeing the investment in the sporting infrastructure in the education sector. Grima added: "We are doing this because we believe that we should provide facilities for sports, exercise and recreation in the schools which will also be of quality".
