WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Indiana University announced Thursday (March 13) that David Reingold will become Chancellor of Indiana University Bloomington, effective June 2.
Reingold is the senior vice president for policy planning at Purdue University and the Justin S. Morrill Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, where he is a professor in the Department of Sociology.
“After starting his academic career through almost two decades at IU Bloomington, David joined Purdue in 2015 and since then has contributed in so many significant ways, from the Liberal Arts Cornerstone Program to Degree in Three, from civics literacy to critical thinking, from a new degree in AI to engagement with D.C. We thank him for his outstanding and dedicated service to the College of Liberal Arts and the university over a whole decade,” Purdue President Mung Chiang said. “As our neighbor IU moves into a new configuration of top leadership, we congratulate David for taking on the newly created role as the Chancellor of IU Bloomington, a university with tremendous intellectual heritage that will flourish under his leadership.”
Reingold is returning to Indiana University, where he spent 18 years as a faculty member, including serving as executive associate dean for the Paul H. O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs from 2008-15.
As IU Bloomington Chancellor, Reingold will be responsible for finance and administration, community engagement, enrollment management, student life and the campus’ research and creative activities. Reingold will also oversee the Office of the Provost, which will continue to manage the academic functions of the IU Bloomington campus. As Chancellor, he will lead faculty and staff toward the goals outlined in the IU 2030 strategic plan, according to an Indiana University news release.
As dean of Purdue’s College of Liberal Arts, Reingold led initiatives including the launch of Cornerstone Integrated Liberal Arts, a national model for reimagining general education; Degree Plus, which allows students to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree along with a Bachelor of Science degree in four years; the first Degree in Three program; and Empowering Excellence, a broad program to support faculty research.
As senior vice president at Purdue, Reingold is responsible for coordinating the university’s footprint in the nation’s capital through the Purdue@DC initiative and advancing Purdue’s freedom of expression and freedom of inquiry efforts, along with Purdue’s systemwide civics literacy graduation requirement and critical thinking initiatives across the curriculum.
Patrick Wolfe, Purdue provost and executive vice president for academic affairs and diversity, said, “Dean Reingold’s leadership has distinguished our College of Liberal Arts in key areas, from Cornerstone and general education — recognized by the National Endowment for the Humanities — to disciplines such as history and philosophy, which directly complement and reinforce Purdue’s STEM strengths.”
Reingold was also a founding co-director of the Krach Institute for Tech Diplomacy at Purdue and serves as commissioner of the Indiana Commission on Community Service and Volunteerism, for which he is a past chair.
“It has been an honor and privilege to serve Purdue University over the past decade,” Reingold said. “I will forever be grateful to former President Mitch Daniels for giving me the opportunity to come to West Lafayette and to President Mung Chiang for his ongoing support and friendship. I am confident Purdue University and the College of Liberal Arts will continue to thrive in the years ahead.”
Reingold received his BA in sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his master’s and PhD in sociology from the University of Chicago.
Wolfe announced that Joel Ebarb, executive associate dean in the College of Liberal Arts, will serve as interim dean beginning June 2. A search for the new dean will be announced in the coming weeks.
