June Short
LEXINGTON, Ky. – June Carolyn (Fagg) Short, passed away on Sunday March 2, 2025, at the Willows at Hamburg in Lexington, Ky. She was 91 years of age.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Ralph Edward Short, her parents, Stephen and Alice (Carey) Fagg, and sister Priscilla Caswell.
June was born and raised in Marblehead, Mass., and graduated from Marblehead High School in 1951. She continued her education at Salem State Teacher’s College, earning her a degree in 1954. She remained a stoic New Englander to the very end! Her teaching career spanned over 35 years, where she taught at the elementary, high school, and junior college levels.
In 1965, June met her husband Ralph through her loyal and diligent involvement in her local church in Boston. They married in 1966 and adopted their son David in 1969. Her teaching positions took her to many locations, including New Hampshire, Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia. In 1975, she and Ralph settled in Lexington, Mo., where they instructed at Wentworth Military Academy for over 20 years. On retirement, June moved to Kennebunk, where she was an active member of the South Congregational Church for over 20 years.
June was always a very busy woman who prided herself in her volunteer work throughout the community, as well as through her relationship with her faith and church and the vibrant comradery she found as an ardent P.E.O Sister in Kennebunk. She was a voracious gardener, painter, and calligrapher who above all, loved to GIVE.
June was never reticent in sending a card, together with a thoughtful note to friends both near and far. She also took great care in writing herself useful words of encouragement as well as lists – oh, so many lists. She was well known for her fantastic organizational skills after all!
June’s great sense of humor became more and more legendary as the years went on. She has given all those who knew her some deep and genuine belly laughs with her quick wit and quirky word choices. She has been a wonderful mother and a muched loved mother-in-law. We are glad that she is at peace, but she is so much loved and very sorely missed.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David and Lisa Short of Winchester, Ky., niece Linda Short Heath of Bethel, and nephews Stephen Caswell (Paris, Maine), James Caswell (Swampscott, Mass.), William Short (St. Ives, Cornwall, U.K.), and Mark Short (Concord, N.H.).
A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, May 15, 2025, at the South Congregational Church in Kennebunk, at 11 a.m.
June has asked for donations to the “Coats of Kindness’” in lieu of flowers.
