A super specialty course on urogynecology, which is essential for the proper treatment of various bladder-related diseases, will be started at Cama Hospital. This course will provide training in bladder infections, urethral and uterine surgeries in government hospitals. This will enable women coming to government hospitals for treatment to receive treatment from expert doctors.

A separate outpatient department for the treatment of pelvic diseases, called Urogynaec, has been operating at the renowned Cama Hospital for Gynecology and Obstetrics under the Department of Medical Education and Research since 2019. This department was started as pelvic diseases are prevalent among women. This is the first center in government hospitals. The Urogynaec department is getting good response from women. Gynecologists or urologists treat in this department.

However, experts with combined expertise in both these disciplines are not available to treat patients in this department. Therefore, a one-year fellowship course will be started by the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences to ensure that female patients receive treatment from expert doctors in both these subjects, and to ensure that students are provided with education on this subject in government hospitals. Since this course is a superspecialty, only students who have completed postgraduate education in gynecology or urology will be able to take admission. The first class of this course is likely to start from August 2025.

Relief for students along with patients

Since this course is not taught in government medical colleges in Mumbai, students have to take admission in private hospitals. Due to this, they have to bear the financial burden. However, students will get relief after the Eurogynecology course starts in August at Cama Hospital. Also, the path to treatment by highly specialised doctors will be paved for patients in the urogynecology department of Cama Hospital, informed Dr. Tushar Palave, Medical Superintendent of Cama Hospital.

3,190 patients treated in six years

A total of 3,190 patients were treated under the Urogynec Outpatient Department of Cama Hospital during the six-year period from 2019 to 2024. Of these, 704 patients underwent the procedure of bladder irrigation. In this procedure, the bladder is cleaned with a sterile liquid. The incidence of this problem has been increasing among women in the past few days. Therefore, it is believed that with this new course, women will be able to get better treatment from expert doctors.
