An investigation is underway after three children found and apparently consumed suspected fentanyl pills in a classroom at a Victorville preschool this week, authorities said.

Officials were first notified of an issue on Tuesday, when staff at La Petite Academy preschool and daycare, 14040 Bear Valley Road, notified officials that unknown blue pills had been found in in a classroom, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

"La Petite staff located/collected the pills and immediately notified law enforcement," a statement issued by the department said. "The responding deputy recognized the blue pills with 'M30' imprinted on them as possible counterfeit pills which may contain fentanyl."

A review of video surveillance footage revealed three children "who appeared to have ingested the pills," the statement said.

The children's parents were notified and they were taken to a hospital for treatment, along with to members of the school's staff, officials said.

At least one of the children later tested positive for fentanyl.

Deputies assigned to the Sheriff’s Gang/Narcotic Divisions Overdose Response Team have taken charge of the investigation.

"La Petite staff is cooperating with law enforcement to help determine the origin of the pills," according to the statement.
