The Walker County Board of Education recognized area high school cheerleading teams for their accomplishments this school year.
"They work so hard," Walker County Schools Superintendent Dr. Dennis Willingham said during the school board's March meeting. "They're often the unsung heroes because of all the work they put in. On behalf of myself and the board, we appreciate the work that you do and we especially appreciate the way that you represent Walker County Schools."
Willingham also thanked cheerleading sponsors and the cheerleaders' parents for their dedication to the sport.
The following cheer teams were recognized:
• Curry High — AHSAA 4A Central Super Regional (second place) and 4A State Finals (fourth place)
• Cordova High — Walker County Cheer Competition (second place), UCA Magic City Super Regional (winners) and AHSAA 4A State Finals (16th place)
• Dora High — Walker County Cheer Competition (winner), AHSAA 4A Central Super Regional Champions, NHSCC State Finalists, and UCA National High School Cheerleading Competition at Disney World (third in the nation)
Other accomplishments by the teams were also mentioned.
Following the recognitions, school board members also approved field trips and facility use agreements and tabled a vote on proposed handbook policy changes for the 2025-26 school year.
School board votes to sell Parrish property
The Walker County Board of Education voted during its February meeting to sell a piece of surplus property.
Details of the sale were provided last week.
"We had a piece of surplus property in Parrish that was no longer needed by the Walker County Board of Education," Superintendent Dr. Dennis Willingham explained. "Pastor Steven Yarbrough of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church contacted us about the possibility of purchasing the property because of the close proximity to property already owned by the church."
Willingham said school board attorney Russ Robertson had the 1.47-acre property along Fifth Street appraised and the school board agreed to sell it for the appraised value of $5,000.
"This property will be used by the church to further serve the community, so it was a win-win for everyone involved," Willingham said.
