Craven County Schools welcomed a new member to the Craven County Board of Education, Lee Kirkman, representing District 2.
Kirkman was officially sworn in during a recent board work session, bringing his roots in education, leadership, and community service to the school district, said Jennifer Wagner, director of communications for Craven County Schools.
Kirkman was appointed to the seat by the Craven County Board of Education following the resignation of Scott Murphy, chairman and District 2 representative for the board, in February.
Murphy’s resignation went into effect on Feb. 10, which he said was necessary so he could focus on his faith and family.
Kirkman is a Craven County native and graduate of West Craven High School, N.C. State University and East Carolina University.
He has worked 20 years as a teacher and administrator and more than 17 years in ministry in Craven County.
As the owner of Kirkman Farm Ministries and Kirkman Family Farms, he continues to work with youth by offering an after-school program for James W. Smith Elementary students, focusing on tutoring and hands-on farm experiences.
Following a swearing-in ceremony, a reception connected Kirkman with fellow board members, staff, and community members, Wagner said.
