The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will hold its third annual Family Literacy Day from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday in Frame-Westerberg Commons.
Pitt-Bradford early-level students begin planning the event with Dr. Patricia Lanzon, assistant professor of education, in January to take place during March, which is National Reading Month. This year’s theme is “The Wizard of Oz.”
“Our students organize the vendors’ tables and scavenger hunt, create activities for their own tables and take care of any issues we have on the day of the event,” Lanzon said.
Children can read to emotional support dogs, get their pictures with Pitt-Bradford athletes in Oz and select books to take home. They can play games, make crafts and enter to win a literacy basket. Parents can play alongside their children or play a financial literacy game with Pitt-Bradford’s business management program.
Area organizations that host tables at the event include the Kiwanis Club of Bradford; St. Bonaventure University Education Association; Zonta Club; McKean County Housing Authority; Bradford Area Public Library; PNC Bank; Northwest Bank; CARE for Children Rainbow Corner; Cosmos’ Lounge and Fretz Middle School.
Pitt-Bradford groups participating include Pitt-Bradford Arts, the Pride Inclusivity Network; Instructional Course Design; Family and Community course; Early Level field block students; Theories and Practices course; student athletes; Health and Physical Education students and Hanley Library.
Last year more than 200 children of all ages attended with their families. Cookies, lemonade and coffee will be available.
