Howard University mechanical engineering professor, and department chair and certified professional engineer Nadir Yilmaz, Ph.D., was recently elected to the Board of Directors for the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). Yilmaz will serve as Professional Interest Council V chair for the 2025-2028 term.

I am humbled and honored to be elected by the members of ASEE and look forward to serving on the Board to promote and advance engineering education,” says Yilmaz.

Founded in 1893, ASEE is a global society with over 12,000 individual, institutional, and corporate members committed to a shared vision of excellent and broadly accessible education to empower students and engineering professionals who value and help promote innovation, integrity, diversity, and inclusion.

The many professional interests of ASEE are represented as divisions grouped into five professional interest councils. As chair of the Professional Interest Council V, Yilmaz will be responsible for overseeing 11 of these divisions, which include major interests such as aerospace, college industry partnerships, engineering design and graphics, multidisciplinary engineering, and ocean and marine engineering.

Yilmaz has been a member of ASEE for two decades. In 2023, he was elevated to ASEE Fellow, becoming the first person at Howard to hold the title.

Yilmaz’s contributions to engineering education and outstanding teaching have been recognized by ASEE, as well as by American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), and SAE International, formerly named the Society of Automotive Engineers. Yilmaz is also a fellow member of each of these professional societies.

In 2013, Yilmaz was the recipient of the ASEE Gulf-Southwest Outstanding Teaching Award, which focuses on outstanding classroom performance, as well as the 2013 New Mexico Tech University Distinguished Teaching Award. He also received the SAE International Faculty Advisor Award in both 2013 and 2016.

SAE International has recognized Yilmaz for successfully preparing young engineers to help in addressing societal challenges with both the 2011 Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award and the 2016 Excellence in Engineering Education Award. In 2017, he received the NSPE Engineering Education Excellence Award and the ASME Outstanding Section Advisor Award.
