One traditional Surrey school has been ranked among the best in the world, alongside educational establishments in the USA, the UAE and Switzerland.
The prestigious Spears Schools Index annually ranks the world’s leading private schools that are in demand from parents worldwide.
Charterhouse in Godalming is one of these selected schools, appearing on the list for its focus on “dynamic and energetically ambitious students.”
Set in 250‑acres, the school has plenty of room for sports, with seven grass sports pitches, three full‑sized Astroturf pitches, an athletics stadium, a sports centre, 24 tennis courts and a nine hole golf course.
As part of its review Spear’s acknowledges that pupils don’t just thrive academically but also gain skills and attitudes that will help them through their adult lives. The magazine praises the values given to students, such as kindness, perseverance and moral courage.
Founded in 1611, Charterhouse is an independent boarding and day school, providing an education for boys and girls aged 13 to 18. For the 24/25 academic year day fees are £15,006 a term and £18,806 for boarders.
In 2024, 17- pupils took wither A-levels of the IB Diploma Programme, with 86% of papers awarded A* - B grades ( or equivalent). 75% of pupils gain a place at their firm choice of university.
Wihtin the UK the majority of these go to Russel Groups, but many take up spots at international universities in North America and beyond.
Schools have been chosen for their examination results, as well as a wide range of social, cultural and pastoral factors. There are 36 schools from the UK listed.
Despite making up a large proportion of the list, Spear’s say the number of UK schools have declined since previous years.
The magazine lists several reasons for this, including the introduction of VAT on fees, and a feeling that ‘traditional’ values were not being upheld.
While Charterhouse is the only Surrey school in the top 100, Broomfield House School has also been included as a recommended location. Listed as a Surrey school by the magazine, its Richmond address makes it technically a London school.
Established in 1876, the prep school combined tradition with modernity. Frequent leavers destinations include St Paul’s, The Lady Eleanor Holles School and Wimbledon High School.
