HONOLULU (Island News) -- Calling all learners! Whether you’re a parent whose child is about to start kindergarten, or if you’re a high schooler about to graduate, these summer programs could be the next big opportunity.
Kindergarten can be stressful for both the parent and the child. That’s why the Summer Start Transition Program, which returns this year, exposes the keiki to a classroom environment. It may be taught in a home, but it helps the child build confidence, especially if they have little to no preschool experience.
Older children and young adults in high school also have some opportunities to learn and grow this summer. HIDOE is offering online courses for high school students that register through Hawaii Online Courses (formerly known as E-School). This can help them earn more high school credits or recover some they might have lost. For students reaching for higher education, those eligible can earn college credits if they register for courses partnered with the University of Hawaii.
HIDOE recognizes there are some who want to work when they graduate high school. There’s a program for that, too, and it’s called College, Career and Community Learning Opportunities. It includes paid summer internships through HIDOE so young adults about to graduate can gain workforce experience before starting their next step.
Specialized support is also available for students with learning disabilities or those who aren't fluent in English. These programs include:
English Learner Extended Learning Opportunities
Extended School Year (ESY)
Alternative Learning Program Support and Services (ALPSS).
