Actor and comedian Russell Brand was today charged with rape, indecent assault, oral rape and two counts of sexual assault against four women. Detectives began an investigation after 50-year-old Brand was accused of rape, sexual assaults and emotional abuse by several women in a joint investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4 Dispatches in September 2023. The Metropolitan Police have now charged Brand - who lives in Florida - by post with one count each of rape, indecent assault and oral rape, as well as two counts of sexual assault, relating to four different women, and issued a court summons. Brand has previously denied the accusations, and said all his sexual relationships were 'absolutely always consensual'. The alleged incidents took place between 1999 and 2005, and Brand is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on May 2. The star was married to pop singer Katy Perry from 2010 to 2012 - then in 2017 wed Laura Gallacher, the sister of presenter Kirsty, and the pair have three children. On Wednesday, Brand attended a record reveal party for prominent Christian worship singer Brandon Lake in Charleston, South Carolina, and said: 'I really admire you because I don't think it's very easy to live in a commercial space, to be an entertainer, and remain aligned with the Lord.'

FTSE 100 suffers worst day in FIVE YEARS as global markets go into meltdown over Donald

The worldwide stocks selloff deepened after China hit back by mirroring America's 34 per cent tariffs on its exports, in a grim sign of escalation. But Mr Trump swiped at 'panicking' Beijing, posting on his Truth Social site: 'CHINA PLAYED IT WRONG, THEY PANICKED - THE ONE THING THEY CANNOT AFFORD TO DO!' The US President had earlier bizarrely claimed that Sir Keir Starmer was 'very happy' with the brutal tariffs he had also imposed on Britain.

Joanne Sharkey who suffocated newborn baby Callum to death in 1998 before dumping his body

A mother who suffocated her newborn baby and left his body in woodland has avoided jail today after finally being brought to justice nearly three decades later. Joanne Sharkey, 55, had pleaded guilty in March to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and endeavouring to conceal the birth of a child - following her arrest 25 years after the body of her son was found inside two knotted bin bags. But Sharkey, a 28-year-old council worker at the time of baby Callum's death, was today given only a two-year suspended prison sentence at Liverpool Crown Court. Judge Mrs Justice Eady told Sharkey: 'The real question is whether appropriate punishment can only be achieved by a term of immediate custody. Having carefully considered this issue, I am satisfied that this very sad case calls for compassion.' It comes 27 years after the baby, who was later named as Callum, was discovered by a dog walker near Gulliver's World theme park in Warrington on March 14, 1998.
