Jacob Maras has been appointed the new Minnehaha County highway superintendent.
County commissioners approved the promotion on Tuesday, April 1, on a 5-0 vote.
Maras, who was previously the assistant highway superintendent, has been serving in an interim position since November when the previous department leader, Steve Groen, resigned to accept a position in Kansas.
A recruitment process was held over the winter and Maras emerged as the selection of the commissioners.
Maras, originally from DeSmet, earned his civil engineering degree from South Dakota State University and worked for the City of Sioux Falls for 5 ½ years as a project manager before joining the county in 2017 first as project engineer and then was named as the assistant superintendent in 2022.
Maras told the commissioners he would work to improve the county highway and bridge system and to make sure it’s safe for the residents.
County Human Resources Director Carey Deaver added that it was her “distinct pleasure” to announce the selection and wrote in a memo that Maras had “built a solid reputation among staff, elected officials, partner organizations and the public as a problem solver and trusted voice on all matters related to the county’s extensive road and bridge network.”
