Elementary school teacher accused of assault on special needs student

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - An elementary school teacher was charged with one count of battery and assault of a disabled child on Tuesday.

According to the West Virginia State Police, Patricia Summerfield was arrested at Holz Elementary.

A release from WVSP says that Summerfield “grabbed the 3-year-old disabled child and drug her across the floor causing minor injuries. This incident was witnessed by two other school employees.”

A statement from Kanawha County Schools said, in part, “A report was made to Holz administrators on Tuesday about a possible incident with a staff member. School administrators took all appropriate action per KCS policies.”

Summerfield was given a $75,000 dollar bond, which has been posted. Her preliminary hearing has been set for April 10th.
