AARP Smart Driver class

The AARP will host a “Smart Driver” class from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 6 at the Delmont Public Library.

Participants can refresh their driving skills, learn safe, proven driving techniques and learn about navigating roundabouts.

The cost is $20 for AARP members and $25 for non-members. Register by calling 412-438-8413.

28th annual Blessing of the Bikes

The 28th annual Blessing of the Bikes will take place at 12:30 p.m. following the April 27 service at Murrysville Alliance Church, 4130 Old William Penn Highway in Murrysville.

All bikers are invited to the morning service at 11 a.m. There will be free coffee and donuts and free ride pins and year bars.

The event regularly draws 1,000-plus attendees, and police will briefly close a path to Route 22 as riders exit the church.

Used book sale donations

The Murrysville Community Library and local branch of the American Association of University Women will host their annual used book sale May 1-3, and are collecting donations for the sale through April 28.

Gently used books, particularly for children, can be brought to the library, along with teen and adult fiction and non-fiction books, and jigsaw puzzles.

Encyclopedias, religious books, manuals, textbooks, self-help books and musty or moldy books will not be accepted.

Clean-up week permits

April 7-12 is Murrysville Clean-Up Week, and residents can pick up permits from the municipal building to take items to the Pleasant Valley Landfill through April 11 between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m.; and April 12 from 7-11 a.m.

Permit passes are available at the reception desk in the municipal building, 4100 Sardis Road in Murrysville.

Learn to play pickleball

The Murrysville Recreation Department will host a “Pickleball: Learn to Play” program in April and May.

The program will take place on Tuesdays at 6 p.m., and participants can choose from two sessions, April 15-29 and May 13-27. Sessions will be at Kovalczik Park, 160 Koval Court in Murrysville.

The cost is $30 per person and the class is for adults age 18 and older. Participants must bring their own paddle.

Woman’s club scholarships

The Murrysville Woman’s Club is accepting applications for its annual non-traditional scholarship program. A minimum of three, $3,000 scholarships will be awarded to women seeking to further their education.

Applicants must be Westmoreland County residents, 21 years or older, and must demonstrate financial need. They must be currently enrolled in college or able to provide proof of enrollment.

Applications are available at Seton Hill College, Westmoreland County Community College’s Hempfield and Murrysville campuses, the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, and at libraries in Murrysville, Delmont, Greensburg and New Kensington. The deadline to apply is April 25.

ESAL art show in Latrobe

The East Suburban Artists League show and reception is taking place at the Latrobe Art Center through April 19.

An awards reception will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. April 11 at the center, 819 Ligonier St. in Latrobe. Admission is free. Sixty-five original art pieces from 33 artists are on display in the exhibition.

ESAL welcomes augmented reality artist

Augmented reality artist Christopher Ruane will be the featured speaker at the East Suburban Art League’s April 3 meeting in Murrysville.

Ruane is a pioneer in the extended reality space, combining virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality and blending the real and digital worlds. He was recently awarded the grand prize at the 2024 New Media Film Festival by judges from HBO, Marvel and the Grammy Awards. The league’s meeting will be at 7 p.m. at Christ’s Lutheran Church, 5330 Old Logan Ferry Road in Murrysville.

Library boards joint meeting

The public is invited to attend a joint meeting of the Murrysville Community Library and its foundation board for their joint annual meeting at 7 p.m. April 10.

Attendees can meet new library director Kat Neidig and learn about upcoming projects and events at the library.

Longtime library partners the American Association of University Women will also be recognized for their ongoing support and monthly programs.

Spring cantata concert

The Murrysville Cantata Choir will present “Blessed: A Holy Week Journey Through the Beatitudes,” a cantata by composer Joel Raney, on April 13.

The newly released cantata presents the life of Christ through the lens of the beatitudes. The choir will be accompanied by piano and a small chamber ensemble.

The choir is in its eighth season.

The concert will be at 4 p.m. April 13 at First Presbyterian Church, 3202 North Hills Road in Murrysville.

There is no cost to attend, however a free-will donation will be accepted.

Electric car club show

Three Rivers EVA, an electric car club, will mark Drive Electric Earth Month in April with a car show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 19.

It will be in the parking lot at First Presbyterian Church, 3202 North Hills Road in Murrysville.

AARP driving course

AARP will host a two-day “Smart Driver” class that can result in a discount on auto insurance.

The classes will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 7-8 at the Delmont Public Library at 75 School Street. Both days are required of participants.

Instructors will teach safe, proven driving techniques and refresh drivers’ skills with left turns, right-of-way and navigating roundabouts.

Youth ministry director at ‘Boomers & Beyond’

The Mother of Sorrows’ “Boomers & Beyond” speaker series will welcome the church’s regional youth ministry director, Jacon Gindhart, as its featured speaker on April 8.

The meeting will be at noon at the church’s social hall, 4202 Old William Penn Highway in Murrysville.

Gindhart will discuss how his experience in and out of seminary led him to youth ministry, and discuss why it is vitally important in the modern church.

The public is invited; there is no cost to attend. Participants may bring a bag lunch and a guest.

Easter recreation department events

The Murrysville Recreation Department will host the following upcoming Easter events:

• Egg My Yard, April 14: Register to have your yard “egged” with candy-filled plastic eggs for an at-home egg hunt. Registration is open until April 9 at MurrysvillePArecreation.com/195/egg-my-yard.

• Easter Egg Scramble, April 1-20: Explore the wetlands trail at Murrysville Community Park, 4056 Wiestertown Road, find all the hidden letters and unscramble them to find a secret Easter word. Letters will be stationed along the trail through April 20, and prizes will be awarded to one child and one adult.

To enter, scan the QR code at the wetlands. Winners will be drawn at random on April 21. The wetlands are located across Wiestertown Road from the main park entrance.

Musical mystery fundraiser

The Delmont Visionary Committee will host a “Musical Mysteries & More” fundraiser from 5:30-9 p.m. May 10 at The Lamplighter.

Tickets are $55 for the evening of comedy, mystery and musical theater. It will also include basket raffles and a 50/50 drawing.

May school board meeting dates changed

The Franklin Regional school board will alter its regular meeting schedule in May. The board’s committee-of-the-whole (non-voting) meeting will be May 5. Its voting meeting will take place May 12.

AUP inviting new members 

The Association of University People (AUP) invites singles 50-plus, who are four-year college graduates, to join them for activities and to meet new people. Activities include monthly dinners, social gatherings, concerts, meeting up at local wineries, day trips and Scrabble.

Those interested can attend three activities as guests before joining.

Pet walk to benefit rescues planned for Boyce Park

The Wildflower Pet Walk, formerly the Friends of Jupiter Pet Walk, will be held April 27 at the Tanglewood Shelter on Pierson Run Road at Boyce Park.

The event starts at 9 a.m., with the walk beginning at 10 a.m., and will take place rain or shine. It includes a 1-mile walk, basket raffle, pet vendors, pet photos, food truck and local rescues. New dog and cat items will be collected for rescues.

Walk participants must register and sign a release. People may walk with or without a pet. All dogs must be leashed, licensed and vaccinated, and be people and dog friendly.

Proceeds benefit local rescues including Wildflowers Sanctuary, East Coast Bulldog Rescue, Homeless Cat Management Team and Bridges from Kuwait.
