US colocation provider PhoenixNAP is finally set to break ground on a second data center in Phoenix, Arizona, and is looking to expand its existing facility in the city.

BizJournal reports the company is set to begin construction on the second phase of its existing Phoenix data center later this year, adding a second, 530,000-square-foot (49,240 sqm) building, known as PHX02.

JLL executive managing director Mark Bauer told the publication PhoenixNAP will start the 30MW project, located at 3221 E Elwood Street, in the next four months. Construction is set to be completed in Q4 2026.

“PhoenixNAP is known for being a multi-tenant [data center] developer,” Bauer said. “The need for multi-tenant capacity is high in Phoenix.”

The facility will reportedly be able to host 44,000 racks with densities up to 44kW.

Bauer added PHX02 will have the ability to increase its capacity to 50MW via natural gas-powered fuel cells from Bloom Energy.

Founded in 2010, PhoenixNAP is an IT services provider offering Infrastructure-as-a-Service solutions, including bare metal server, cloud, hardware leasing, and colocation.

The company currently operates a 200,000 sq ft (18,600 sqm) data center in Phoenix that opened back in 2010. The company purchased the property, at 3402 E University Drive, for $6.3 million in 2009. That facility currently offers 20MW and is set to be expanded to 25MW, according to Bauer.

PhoenixNAP leases space within a number of other data centers globally, including sites in Ashburn, Virginia (DataBank); Atlanta, Georgia (CoreSite); Amsterdam, Netherlands (Iron Mountain); Singapore (Equinix); and Belgrade, Serbia.

The company originally announced plans for a second data center, adjacent to its existing facility, back in 2021 – though no timelines were set for development.

At the time the company said the facility would initially support 10MW of capacity, with potential for expansion in the future. The new facility was set to provide 500,000 square feet (46,500 sqm) of floor space.

PhoenixNAP reportedly acquired the 6.4-acre parcel of land for $10.2 million.
