Comedian John Mulaney recently shared a hilarious story about getting duped by a phony manager for Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, and almost getting scammed out of $2,800 in cash.
At the beginning of Wednesday’s episode of “Everybody’s Live,” Mulaney explained that they were going to do a bit where Richard Kind’s fake tortoise died, and to pay tribute to the tortoise, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony would show up and sing their song “Tha Crossroads.”
“If you’re not familiar with ‘Crossroads,’ it was an enormous hit that Bone Thugs-N-Harmony had in 1996 about their friend’s tragic death,” Mulaney said, “and I cannot overstate how hugely popular it was with horned-up junior high kids at Catholic schools to grind with each other during the Clinton administration.”
Mulaney explained that he and the show reached out to a contact for Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, which they found online. They set up a Zoom call with someone they thought was the band’s manager, who assured Mulaney and the show that the band was into the idea for the bit.
The late night show host said the supposed manager and the band never signed the contract, telling the show they needed $2,800 cash for “just running around money.”
Mulaney then jokingly explained that he had to withdraw the money from his personal account because of a “tax thing.” However, he set up safeguards for his sobriety and made it so that he can’t withdraw more than $300. If he needed more, he had to tell certain people. When he called his wife, Olivia Munn, to say he needed $2,800 cash, she told him she loved him and he could tell her anything.
Then, he said at the last minute, the hip-hop band’s so-called manager apparently demanded $100,000 for the group t appear on the show.
“And then I said very uncharacteristically, you have disrespected me and you have disrespected my show,” Mulaney said, laughing, on “Everybody’s Live.”
He continued: “Now, I didn’t tell you all this just to air the dirty laundry of what it’s like behind the scenes of a show,” Mulaney said. “Many guests have shaken me down for a couple thousand dollars and then canceled last minute. It happens all the time. I’m telling you about it because I’m genuinely worried. After a little investigating, I have come to believe that the man I was talking to was not the manager of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. In fact, several sites list a different person.”
Mulaney urged Bone Thugs-N-Harmony to call into the live show and clear things up; otherwise, things might be awkward when they run into one another at the Kia Forum in late April for a festival.

“And to him, whomever I was dealing with,” Mulaney said, “Sir, first off, credit where credit is due. I do indeed look like someone you could hustle over a booking for Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.”
