South Alabama signed its third player out of the transfer portal this week — and its second small-school All-American — on Thursday.
Peyton Law, a 6-foot-7 forward from Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Tenn., officially joined a Jaguars portal class that also includes guards Chaze’ Harris (Life University) and Brian Hawthorne (Rockhurst). Like Harris, Law was a first-team NAIA All-American this season.
A native of Calhoun, Ga., Law averaged 16.2 points and 6.7 rebounds this past season at FHU, which went 30-6 and reached the semifinals of the NAIA tournament. Law — who has one season of eligibility remaining — was part of the Lions’ 2024 national championship team, which also included current South Alabama guard J.J. Wheat.
“Peyton is an absolute warrior and an everyday dude, ” South Alabama coach Richie Riley said. “His skill and versatility on the offensive end fits our style of play. Defensively, he has instincts you can’t teach and he rebounds at a high level. I’m so excited about the major impact he’s going to have on our program.”
The portal transfers join a 2025 South Alabama recruiting class that also includes high school point guards Desmond Williams (Baker) and Samuel Shoptaw (Windermere, Fla.) and junior-college forward Stephen Williams (Coastal Alabama South). Shoptaw and Desmond Williams signed with the Jaguars in November, while Stephen Williams — originally from Atmore — is expected to do so when late signing period opens on April 16.
South Alabama is expected to sign at least one more player out of the transfer portal in the current cycle, which runs through April 22. In addition to seniors Elijah Ormiston, Judah Brown, Dylan Fasoyiro and Cantia Rahming, the Jaguars had four scholarship players enter the transfer portal since the end of the season — All-Sun Belt forward Barry Dunning, starting guard Myles Corey and reserve forwards Julian Margrave and Ethan Kizer.
South Alabama went 21-11 in 2024-25, sharing the Sun Belt Conference regular-season title. Five players from that team have remaining eligibility and are set to return next season: Wheat, forward Randy Brady and guards John Broom, Jayden Cooper and Maxwell Land.
