NEW WAVERLY, Texas (KBTX) - This week’s KBTX Sports & American Momentum Bank Classroom Champion is Mallie West.

The New Waverly High school senior has a 4.6 grade point average and ranks 10th in her class. Mallie is a member of the Beta Club and the All ‘A’ Honor Roll. Organized and determined are two traits that have helped Mallie achieve a lot of success.

“She is going to do whatever it takes. If that means the extra tutoring, asking the questions, asking for help, she is going to make sure and take care of it. So she works hard and some of her academics do come natural. She is a bright girl. Very, very bright in so many things, but she works hard,” said New Waverly High School Spanish Teacher Yessica Betancourt.

Athletically, Mallie has earned 10 varsity letters in track & field, basketball, and softball. She throws the discus in track and advanced to Area a year ago. Was a four year letter winner in basketball and was voted the team captain for all four years. She has been the District’s New Comer of the Year, Defensive MVP, Offensive MVP and after averaging 25 points, 6 assists and 4 steals last season was the District’s Most Valuable Player.

“Honestly, I strived for each one each year the one that I did not have and it just kinda happened to line out in a way of finally getting district MVP, so that was my goal this year to do the best I could to finally get that last one that I didn’t have, and it was really cool and rewarding when I got it,” said the New Waverly High School Senior..

Despite all of her success on the basketball court. It’s her softball skills that will take her to Texas Tech on a pitching scholarship. All of her coaches agree that her work ethic is second to none and anchors her success.

“She works hard and dedicates herself to whatever sport she is involved in or even in the classroom where she strives to be the best and that says a lot,” added New Waverly ISD Girls’ Athletic Coordinator.

After graduation Mallie will head to the South Plains to attend Texas Tech University and pursue a degree in biology.
