WADENA — Wadena-Deer Creek High School’s annual “Day of Caring” is set for Wednesday, April 30, and students are looking for community members in need of assistance with outdoor yard projects.
Established in 2007, the event is organized by WDC’s National Honor Society (NHS) and provides students with an opportunity to give back to their community. Volunteers will assist elderly and disabled residents, as well as others in need, with outdoor clean-up projects — free of charge. Tasks will include raking leaves, weeding flower beds, and washing windows, among other yard work.
This year, WDC seniors and NHS members Leah Osberg and Tayton Lehman are coordinating the initiative. Both students expressed their gratitude for the community’s support throughout their high school years and view this event as a way to give back.
“I chose this for my project because I think it’s all about giving back to the community,” said Osberg, who plans to attend the University of Minnesota Moorhead for business. “I’ve been involved in athletics, and I think of all the support people have given me. It’s really about doing what I can to help.”
Lehman, who will attend the University of North Dakota for aerospace and mechanical engineering, echoed Osberg’s sentiment.
“I love being able to give back to the community because they do so much for our school,” he said. “Without their support, I wouldn’t have been able to attend nationals with the Business Professionals of America group my junior year.”

Student volunteers in grades 9-12, along with school staff, will be working on projects from 9 a.m. to early afternoon on April 30.
Community members who need assistance with outdoor projects can call 218-632-2444 and leave a message with their name, phone number, and details of the request. Student coordinators will follow up before the event to confirm details and estimated time for completion. The deadline for requests is noon on April 25.
