Lee County Retired School Personnel recently met at the Fort Madison United Methodist Church. The UMC Women served lunch to 25 guests. Mitzi Jessen, LCRSP Scholarship Chair, announced that three graduating Lee County Seniors will be awarded a $500 scholarship.

Gretchen Kirchner, Legislative Chair, shared information about the Trump Administration dismantling the U.S. Education Department and the possible ripple effects it may have for states and students.

The program was presented by Gwen Norton, Hospice Volunteer Coordinator for EveryStep. Their team of staff and volunteers provide expert medical care, pain management, emotional support and spiritual guidance to hospice patients. Volunteers play an important role, enhancing quality of life for patients and families as well.

Volunteer Veterans are paired with patients who are a Veteran. The Veteran-to-Veteran program proves to be very worthwhile. EveryStep also provides support for the families who have lost their loved one. Norton, who represents the Mt. Pleasant team helps to coordinate volunteers for Des Moines, Henry, Jefferson, Keokuk, Lee, Louisa, Van Buren, and Washington Counties in Iowa. More information about volunteering can be attained by calling 319-385-4472.

Judy Bartachek, LCRSP treasurer and Lee County Board of Health member added that EveryStep Hospice services mirror those that Lee County Health Department provides to their patients. It is suggested that if hospice services are needed for a loved one that the family interview more than one provider and choose the one that can provide the best fit for the patient and the family. LCRSP will meeting again May 7, 12 noon at the St. Paul United Church of Christ in Keokuk.
