EXCITING developments are underway as Fiji National University (FNU) teams up with the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) to propel sports excellence to new heights through World Rugby certification.
In a press release, FNU says this collaboration, supported by World Rugby certification, signifies a significant breakthrough in the advancement of rugby education and training in Fiji.
Recent discussions involving key figures such as Perry Gabriel from Natabua Campus, Varanisese Tagimaucia, Josaia Tulomana, and James Bolabiu of the Fiji Rugby Union’s High-Performance Unit have set the stage for a potential Rugby Refereeing Certification Initiative in partnership with the FRU.
Gabriel highlighted that FNU’s Natabua Campus, as a teacher-training institution, serves as an ideal platform for the launch of professional development programs thanks to its widespread reach of future teachers and supportive facilities.
Bolabiu outlined the FRU’s vision to enhance rugby refereeing standards in Fiji through structured training programs.
Natabua and Nasinu Campuses were identified as prime locations for these initiatives due to their amenities, teacher cohorts, and internet accessibility.
“The programme structure will feature a six-week workshop series, with two-hour sessions per week leading up to the rugby season,” said Bolabiu.
“It will include a blend of practical sessions, such as on-field training, and virtual seminars featuring global referees who will share their expertise and inspire participants.
“The focus will be on refereeing as a professional skill and a potential income stream for graduates.”
The anticipated outcome of this program is the cultivation of elite referees who will uplift Fiji’s rugby ecosystem and lay a positive impact on all Fijian communities.
