Australia appoints new High Commissioner to Fiji

Peter Llewelyn Roberts is Australia’s new High Commissioner to Fiji.

He visited the President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu today and presented his Letter of Credence authorised by the Governor-General of Australia and the Letters of Recall of his predecessor Ewen McDonald.

Ratu Naiqama said during their meeting reiterated that Australia is an important strategic partner for Fiji.

“Under the elevated Vuvale Partnership Agreement, we have seen many initiatives rolled out across a range of sectors including trade and investment, defence, labor mobility, governance, health and infrastructure to name a few,” he said.

He added that  the Australian support over the years has been felt widely across key sectors covering multiple support programs that have assisted national development.

Mr Roberts assured Ratu Naiqama that he would continue to work closely with the Fijian Government.

Prior to this appointment, Mr Roberts served as senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and most recently served as Deputy Head of Mission at the Australian Embassy in Tokyo.

He also served as Ambassador to Timor-Leste from 2018 to 2022. In Canberra he served as Head Strategic Communications Taskforce/Key Sectors Taskforce, Office of the Pacific, DFAT (2018-2022); Assistant Secretary, North Asia Goods, Free Trade Agreement Division, DFAT (2012-2018); and Executive Officer then Director Climate Change Section, DFAT (2004-2007).

H.E. Roberts holds a Bachelor of Asian Studies (Hons) (1999) from the Australian National University (ANU) and a Bachelor of Science also from ANU (1997).
