The Alabama Department of Human Resources receives over 26,500 reports of child abuse annually.
The Child Welfare League of America reported that 11,618 children were victims of neglect in 2022.
Despite these numbers, The Prescott House Child Advocacy Center calls abuse and neglect an underreported issue in the state of Alabama.
According to the nonprofit, child abuse and neglect numbers are up in comparison to last year.
With April being Child Abuse Awareness Month, Prescott House wants to educate others on how to be a trusted adult for child victims and encourage any witnesses to report abuse.
"The mandatory reporting law says that you don't have to know that abuse occurred. You just have to have a reason to suspect it," said Maribeth Thomas, the executive director for Prescott House.
According to Prescott House, most victims of child abuse won't report until after they've turned 18.
Reasons for that include shame, guilt, fear or a lack of trusted adults around the child victim.
"Most abuse, specifically sexual abuse, is perpetrated by someone known and trusted by that family. And so, they have manipulated their way into having access to that child. And so, the child, then, it's a child's word against a trusted adult's word. And that's very difficult for them to tell," said Thomas.
Prescott House deals with all forms of child abuse and neglect, but most commonly deals with sexual abuse.
