Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog’s next stop is the AHL.
The Avalanche announced Wednesday morning that their captain will join the Colorado Eagles on a conditioning assignment as he continues what has been a nearly three-year journey dealing with right-knee problems. Since playing his most recent game with the Avalanche, their Game 6 victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning on June 26, 2022 that won them the Stanley Cup, he has missed all of the 2022-23 and 2023-24 campaigns as well as this season. His lengthy history includes a knee-cartilage transplant procedure in March 2023.

The forward, now 32, rejoined the Avs for that run to the Stanley Cup after having had knee surgery in March 2022. He finished with 11-11-22 in 20 games. He has played 738 regular-season games (248-323-571) with the club that selected him second overall in the 2011 NHL Draft. At 48-27-4 and third in the Central Division, the Avs have clinched a playoff berth and trail the second-place Dallas Stars six points. They also have a seven-point lead on the surging St. Louis Blues. The Avs conclude their regular-season schedule this Sunday against the Anaheim Ducks.
The Eagles will host the Henderson Silver Knights this Friday and Saturday, their final two regular-season home games. They finish their regular season next week with a three-game trip through Ontario and Tucson. They split this past weekend’s two-game home series against the San Jose Barracuda. First in the Western Conference and the Pacific Division, the Eagles have a three-point lead on the Abbotsford Canucks for both of those spots. Clinching the divisional title would allow the Eagles to bypass the best-of-three first-round round of the Calder Cup Playoffs.
If Landeskog does dress for the Eagles at some point, it would be his first career AHL appearance.
Landeskog is not the only big name with the Eagles right now. Last week forward Taylor Makar, the younger brother of Avs star defenseman Cale Makar, joined the Eagles after completing his season at the University of Maine. The 24-year-old made his pro debut with the Eagles last weekend and has a one-year AHL contract set for next season. He had 18-12-30 in 38 games with Maine.
