Safaricom Foundation Unveils ICT Lab at Laikipia Vocational Centre to Boost Digital Skills

Safaricom Foundation has inaugurated a new Information and Communications Technology (ICT) laboratory at Wiyumiririe Technical and Vocational Training Centre in Laikipia, marking a significant boost for digital learning in the region.

The KES 3.5 million facility, constructed and fully equipped by the Foundation, is expected to support the acquisition of digital skills among students enrolled in technical courses such as motor vehicle engineering, garment making and hospitality.

The ICT hub includes computers, a projector, printer and other digital tools aimed at integrating technology into classroom instruction. The initiative forms part of Safaricom Foundation’s broader strategy to enhance training in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions across the country.

“The establishment of this ICT hub is part of our strategy to improve education at Technical and Vocational Training Institutes,” said Safaricom Foundation Chairman Joseph Ogutu. “We expect this particular project to upskill students at the centre while empowering instructors to teach using technology to improve learning outcomes.”

Laikipia is the latest county to benefit from the Foundation’s TVET support programme, following similar investments in Nairobi, Isiolo and Marsabit.

In a related effort to strengthen community health services, Safaricom Foundation also handed over maternity equipment valued at KES 500,000 to Pesi Dispensary in Laikipia West earlier this week.

To date, Safaricom, through its foundations, has invested over KES 322 million in Laikipia County alone, reaching more than 451,000 beneficiaries through projects in education, health and economic empowerment.
