NEW ORLEANS (WVUE/Gray News) - New Orleans police officers are investigating a fatal crash that killed a 6-year-old boy Thursday morning.

Police said they responded to the crash scene in the 1400 block of Desire Street shortly after 8 a.m.

According to the department, the child was getting out of a relative’s car when he was hit.

The boy was taken to a hospital, but he did not survive.

Authorities said the bus driver told them they did not see the child.

Family members at the scene identified the child as Mason Richards. He attended one of the KIPP Public Charter Schools in New Orleans.

Public officials said they are “deeply saddened” to hear about what happened.

“Our thoughts are with his family and our entire school community during this incredibly difficult time,” officials shared in a statement.

Police said the crash remains under investigation.
