VR TRAVEL CLUB | 10-11:15 a.m. through May 29. Sign up for Camarillo Health Care District’s new VR Travel Club and you’ll become a member of a core group that meets regularly for six weeks exploring the world together. Each week is something different, from adventures in Asia, Europe and popular U.S. destinations, to Cuba and North Africa, South America and other places around the globe. Each narrated 3-D video is 2 to 8 minutes and the group takes a couple minutes in between to chat about what we saw and experienced together as we are in the same place virtually at the same time, seeing the same amazing historic sites and natural landscapes. CELEBRATION OF THE WHALES | 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Channel Islands Harbor is thrilled to announce the 26th Annual Celebration of the Whales Festival, set to take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 13. The Celebration of the Whales Festival has become a fun harbor tradition, with fun activities scheduled throughout the day. This year’s event will feature a community “paint a whale” mural project, chalk art, shopping, free kayaking and standup paddleboarding, a children’s fun zone, and more. Activities will be held at the Channel Islands Maritime Museum, Channel Islands Boating Center, the Channel Islands Harbor Farmers Market, with a “Gray Whale Migration Trail” that runs through Harbor View Park that connects the two main activity centers. Children and adults can both enjoy the migration trail, which will be lined with activities, including educational booths about the migration of the Pacific Gray Whale, more than 15 pieces of ocean-themed sidewalk chalk art, a children’s fun zone that includes bounce houses and carnival games, and a community mural project. The mural project is being facilitated by staff at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center Corporation. Located on the public dock behind the Channel Islands Maritime Museum, attendees will have the opportunity to take a tour of the tall ship Mystic Whaler. $5 donations to tour the ship are suggested. STUART DYNASTY: SHAKESPEARE’S COMMON FOLK | 1-3 p.m. through May 8. William Shakespeare lived from 1564 to 1616, a period known as Early Modern England, a time of transition from the medieval to the modern. It is generally considered to span the dynasties of the Tudors and the Stuarts. Shakespeare lived in the middle of that span, and as a keen observer, gave us riveting portraits of the people and events of his era. COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM TRAINING | Through May 7. Recognizing the critical need for community members to be prepared and confident in taking appropriate action, the City of Ventura, in collaboration with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the City of Santa Paula, is excited to announce the return of its Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training program in May 2025. This free, hands-on program empowers 40 local residents with critical disaster response skills, preparing them to take action when it matters most. Enrollment is now open for the Workforce Development Board of Ventura County’s Construction and Trades training program, designed to help residents of the Tri-Counties become competitive applicants as they take the next steps in their careers in the construction industry. SPECIAL EVENT GRANT PROGRAM | Through May 1, May 5. The city of Ventura is now accepting applications for its Special Event Grant Program (SEGP), designed to support community events for local residents. To be eligible, applicants must be nonprofit organizations based in the city of Ventura with 501(c)(3) status. If a nonprofit organization based in Ventura does not have 501(c)(3) status, it must partner with a city of Ventura-based fiscal agent that holds 501(c)(3) status. Additionally, events funded through this program must be held on city-owned property, not private property. The SEGP allocates $10,000 annually to support community celebrations by offsetting the city’s required special event permitting fees. Grants will be awarded up to $2,000 per applicant. WEDNESDAY MEDITATION PRACTICE GROUP | Wednesdays, 6 p.m. The community is invited to a meditation practice group of the Universalist Unitarian Church of Santa Paula. This group celebrates the diversity of Buddhist, mindfulness, and other meditative orientations and welcomes participants from all contemplative traditions to attend. The group is open to everyone regardless of funds; there is a free will offering ($5 suggested with checks made to UUCSP with Meditation in the memo line, mailed to UUCSP, 740 E Main Street, Santa Paula, CA 93060). The meeting will begin with a reading and short discussion, with a guided meditation leading us into a time of silence. There is power in meditating together. We would love to have you join us. WILDLIFE HABITAT IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM | Sundays and Mondays. We need your help removing invasive species and improving wildlife habitat at Harmon Canyon. No previous weed pulling experience is required, our docents will provide training. This volunteer opportunity requires hand pulling weeds so please bring your own gloves and any tools that you think might work well.
