SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A plan to prohibit expulsions from kindergarten through 2nd grade passed the Illinois House Thursday.

The proposal would also require superintendent oversight on any K-2 suspension that goes above 4 days.

State Rep. Will Davis (D-East Hazel Crest) said in an interview that suspensions and expulsions for these kids don't make any sense.

"From an education standpoint, it really doesn't serve any real good," Davis said. "For kids that young who may have started school, seeing their friends everyday and all of a sudden it's taken away."

Republicans opposed the bill. They said they're worried this plan could put teachers at risk of violent behavior from students.

The proposal passed out of the House on a 62-46 vote with all Republicans voting against it alongside some Democrats. It now heads to the Senate floor, where lawmakers could talk about it in the coming weeks.
