Haiti - Curriculum Reform : Technological Education Sector, rewriting of preschool programs...
As part of the ongoing curriculum reform, two groups of technicians, meeting this week in two workshops over three days, worked separately on the Framework Document for the Curriculum of the Technological Education Sector (FETECH) and on the Process for Rewriting the Curriculum for Preschool, and the First and Second Cycles of Primary School.

First Group : Technological Education Sector (FETECH) :
Responsibility for launching this first workshop was entrusted to Professor Jean-Robert Dossaint, Chief of Staff to the Minister of National Education, Augustin Antoine. For now, this work concerns the three series prioritized during the discussion sessions organized on the issue in September 2024 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-43181-haiti-new-secondary-towards-setting-in-motion-of-the-technological-sector.html , namely:

1. Agronomy and Life Sciences and Technology ;
2. Information and Communication Sciences and Technology ;
3. Hospitality, Tourism and Catering.

"We have the heavy responsibility of training competent citizens, capable of contributing to the development of the country, which expects high-quality curricula designed to optimize the intelligence of young people," declared the Chief of Staff of the Minister of National Education.

"Building a robust technological education program, aligned with the demands of the job market, is the key to unlocking the fulfillment of our youth, enabling them to become central players in national development," continued Eric Voli Bi, UNESCO Representative in Port-au-Prince. It should be noted that the UN organization is providing the Ministry with much-appreciated technical and financial support for this curriculum reform project.

Eric Voli Bi advised the developers to ensure that the programs of the secondary technological program meet national and international standards, as well as the demands of a constantly evolving job market.

Miguel Fleurijean, the Director of Secondary Education, responsible for overseeing this project on behalf of the Ministry, praised the educational benefits of this program, which is "an educational path that focuses on the acquisition of technical and professional skills, while integrating theoretical knowledge." It is generally intended for students who wish to prepare for technical careers or pursue higher education in technological fields."

Second Group : Process of rewriting the curricula for preschool, and the first and second cycles of Fundamental education :

Marie Marjorie Télusma, Director of Curriculum and Quality at the Ministry, stated, "[...] the rewriting of the curricula for preschool and cycles I and II of basic education is a key step in our overall strategy to improve the quality of education. It requires strong commitment from decision-makers and the active involvement of management and stakeholders to ensure the inclusion and sustainability of this reform. [...] This moment marks a strong commitment to the continuous improvement of our education system, aligned with the challenges of the 21st century and the needs of our society. Our goal is to create programs that emphasize engaging teaching methods, centered on student activities, and that promote the place of the Creole language in education." We want to ensure that every Haitian child can fully develop their skills and talents, regardless of their background."

Svein Oestveitt, Director of the International Bureau of Education (IBE), reiterated the determination of this specialized UNESCO institute to remain committed to this reform alongside the Ministry. "For Haiti, this curriculum reform is not just another reform. It must form the basis for real, lasting, and structuring change. It aims to provide Haiti with a coherent, structured, endogenous, inclusive, and modern curriculum. It must allow every child, regardless of their situation, to have access to a quality education that develops not only skills, but also civic, ethical, and social values."

"This workshop is the official starting point of a historic project: rethinking the educational content that Haitian children will receive from their earliest years of schooling." This means thinking about what we want a Haitian child to know, understand, feel, and master at each stage of their school career," emphasized Jean-Luc Tondreau, National Education Officer at the UNESCO Office in Port-au-Prince.
