KMBC Hy-Vee Scholar Athlete: Judson McIntosh, Blue Springs South
Blue Springs South senior Judson McIntosh is KMBC and Hy-Vee’s Scholar Athlete of the Week.
McIntosh has been a standout on the tennis court and in the pool, earning recognition for his dedication, discipline and desire to make a difference. He competed in singles tennis during his junior year, placing eighth in the state, and trained four hours a day to perfect his game.
But when college recruiting began, McIntosh realized his true path was in another sport: swimming. The shift paid off. He placed fourth in both the 50- and 100-meter freestyle events at state, all while maintaining a remarkable 4.447 GPA.
Even more inspiring is how McIntosh used his summer to teach children from a domestic abuse shelter how to swim.
For him, the experience wasn’t just about technique—it was about giving kids life-saving skills and the confidence to enjoy the water.
“Being able to save their own lives by learning how to swim and being able to play with their friends in the pool and not be scared of drowning is just so fulfilling,” McIntosh said.
Next year, McIntosh will take his talents to Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, where he will swim for the Mountain Hawks. In recognition of his efforts, Hy-Vee awarded him a $1,000 scholarship.
