The University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI) is proud to announce that Dr. Robert W. Robertson, President and Chief Executive Officer, has been reappointed as a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, School of Advanced Studies, University of London. The appointment covers the 2025-2026 academic year. The announcement comes only a week after he was named a Fellow of the City and Guilds London Institute (FCGI), an accolade only held by three people in the Caribbean region and by fewer than 1,000 individuals during the 140 year history of City & Guilds.

Senior Research Fellowships at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies are awarded to distinguished academics with publication records commensurate with the rank of Reader or Professor. These prestigious positions provide established scholars with an opportunity to pursue high-quality research outputs in a specialized environment. Dr. Robertson has been active in research focusing on the future of work, the skills gap, improving the quality of education, and evidence-based strategic leadership within the tertiary academic sector in the Caribbean.

This reappointment adds to Dr. Robertson’s impressive list of recent accolades. In 2023, he was named a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy by Advance HE, a United Kingdom-based professional association with more than 40,000 members working to improve education globally. This recognition was based on his sustained record of effective strategic leadership and extensive impact in higher education, including innovations introduced in the Caribbean such as certified technical and vocational training, a national digital literacy project with industry certifications, and programmes providing workforce-ready skills.

Dr. Robertson was also named an International Scholar by Global Affairs Canada in 2023, participating in a senior academic administrator mission to Canadian universities focused on natural resource management and environmental technology.

“I am honoured to continue my association with the Institute of Commonwealth Studies,” said Dr. Robertson. “This reappointment provides an excellent opportunity to further research that addresses critical educational and workforce challenges facing Commonwealth nations, particularly in the Caribbean region.”

The Institute of Commonwealth Studies, founded in 1949, is the only postgraduate academic institution in the United Kingdom devoted to the study of the Commonwealth. It is a national and international center of excellence for policy-relevant research, teaching, and discussion on issues pertaining to the Commonwealth.
