Colorado football to retire Travis Hunter, Shedeur Sanders' jerseys in spring game

Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders’ college careers are over, but they’ll forever have a presence around the Colorado football program — or, at the very least, their jersey numbers will.

Hunter and Sanders will have their jerseys retired during the Buffaloes’ spring game on Saturday, the university announced Monday.

Last season, Hunter became the second player in Colorado history to win the Heisman Trophy after a stellar 2024 campaign in which he was one of the top cornerbacks and wide receivers in the country.

Sanders, meanwhile, rewrote the program’s record book despite playing only two seasons at the school. He leaves Boulder with 100 school records, including career passing touchdowns, passer rating and completion percentage.

Together, the two, who began their college careers at Jackson State, lifted the Buffs from one of the worst programs at the major-conference level to one that went 9-4 last season and was in contention for a spot in the College Football Playoff heading into the final week of the regular season.

They’ll become the fifth and sixth players in Colorado football history to have their numbers retired, joining Rashaan Salaam, Byron “Whizzer” White, Joe Romig and Bobby Anderson. Salaam was the program's first Heisman Trophy winner while White went on to become a United States Supreme Court justice.

Hunter and Sanders have been some of the most consistently discussed prospects for next week’s NFL draft. Hunter is universally regarded as a top-five pick while projections around Sanders vary greatly, though as the second-ranked quarterback in the class, it’s likely he’ll get selected in the first round.
