Davenport Community School District looks to finish Phase 1 of long-range facilities plan, begins looking ahead to Phase 2
DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) - Davenport Community School District continues to plan for the future of the district’s facilities. That includes the district’s long-range facilities plan which is nearing the end of Phase 1 and now the district is beginning to plan for Phase 2.
About three years ago, the district began working with Bray Architects to put together a facility master plan and committee to determine what each building needs for upgrades and longevity.
Monday night, Davenport Schools Superintendent TJ Schneckloth said that based off the work that’s already been done, come June, all of the projects in Phase 1 will either be done or started.
Projects in Phase 1 include the following:
- Davenport West renovation of weight lifting room, moving out of the basement
- Furniture and technology upgrades, like the district approving a classroom furniture replacement Monday night for $1,139,451.85 for Garfield, Jackson and McKinley
- The bus barn which will have a ribbon cutting and move the bus barn across the street which will allow the district to build a field turf, new baseball stadium, and bring Central’s baseball stadium out of the flood plane
- Field turf going in a North and West with lights, concession stands, locker rooms, upgraded facilities for soccer teams
- Putting indoor hitting facilities at both Central and West and updating the 20-year-old indoor hitting facility at North
- Building a brand new Sudlow Middle School, sub-surface work currently being done
- Building a brand new SMART Middle School, sub-surface work currently being done
The last project that will wrap up Phase 1 of the district’s construction and project phase will be bids going out for North High School, Superintendent Schneckloth said. Phase 1 projects are expected to be wrapping up in 2027.
Once that happens, the next step will be looking at what Phase 2 looks like, Superintendent Schneckloth said. So far, it’s been reviewed two times by the long-range facilities planning committee and the goal is to have it voted on at the next, regular school board meeting.
District officials said that it’ll be important to work fast and have decisions made by November or December to start getting bids out.
Monday night, Bray Architects gave a presentation and preview on what Phase 2 could look like. A big part of Phase 2 involves Pre-K and behavioral programs.
A layout of the drafted, two-prong plan can be seen, below. The two parts are separated in blue and green.
The district also said that they will want to create a school and community-based planning committee and continue to evaluate every building’s condition in the district.
