A Harmony Party has won the most votes in Latvia following the general elections, BBC reported.

The Harmony party had 19% of votes with the For Development party taking 12% and two populist parties, the KPV LV and the New Conservatives winning 27% between them.

According to near-complete information from the Central Election Commission (1077 of 1078 polling stations), turnout was 54.4% - significantly down even on 2014's previous record low of 58%.

Protecting the interests of the Russian-speaking minority in the country is a top priority of the Harmony Party. Party leader Nils Ušakovs promised in April to challenge through the Constitutional Court the law on the translation of schools of national minorities into Latvian. The Latvian State Language Center fined Ushakov for using the Russian language on social networks, as he is a representative of the municipal government.
