The University of WA has slipped to 99 on the latest international university rankings.

The State’s most prestigious educational institution dropped six places on the Academic Ranking of World Universities tables, down from 93rd last year, but it remained the only WA university to make the top 100.

UWA ranked seventh in Australia, behind the universities of Melbourne (41) and Queensland (54), Monash University (73), the Australian National University (76), Sydney University (80) and the University of NSW (94).

The annual league tables produced by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, based on research performance, are considered to be the most influential global university rankings.

Marketing material for UWA has spruiked its top 100 spot in the ARWU rankings since it broke into the top bracket in 2012.

A spokesman for UWA said more than 1800 universities were ranked world wide to produce the best 1000 and UWA was one of only seven in Australia to be included in the world top 100.

The only other WA institution included in the top 500 was Curtin University, which was listed in a band between 201 and 300.

Harvard University in the US topped the table for a 17th consecutive year.
