Most business can be conducted over the Internet, and soon the same will go for permits in DeLand.

Accela Land Management Permitting software is expected to go live early next month. The city currently has two kiosks set up at City Hall, 120 S. Florida Ave., where the software can be used in the meantime.

Contractors, developers and residents will be able to apply for permits and get updates on inspections via the online portal.

"The hope is to make it easier for our applicants," said Debi Glick, the city's land development manager. "It's time to get online."

The move is part of a state mandate requiring local governments to make information regarding building permits and inspections available online, said Chris Graham, city spokesman.

The city budgeted $872,643 for Accela, which was paid out of the building enterprise fund.

DeLand is currently the only city in Volusia County using Accela, but the program is also used in Tampa, Charlotte County and Manatee County, said Kate Helete, a senior associate at Riff City Strategies, which works with Accela.
