Horry County Special Education Teacher Receives National Recognition from Education Associates for Career Readiness Achievements in Classroom

December 09, 2022 --

Functional Special Education Teacher Emily Scheffler from Horry County Public Schools attended the 2022 National CASE Conference in Salt Lake City to receive the 2nd Annual Gary Bates Memorial Award. Scheffler was recognized for her outstanding work implementing Education Associates’ Project Discovery curriculum with her students. Project Discovery is a hands-on career exploration curriculum that can be used for students of all functional levels and adapted to help students with the most significant challenges. It includes lesson plans, video modeling, performance-based assessments, hands-on activities, and more. Project Discovery is proud to be endorsed by CASE, the US Department of Education, and National Dropout Prevention Network.

“Project Discovery has been such a blessing to our classroom. It has given my students background knowledge and independence with work tasks. They were able to apply the knowledge that they received from Project Discovery and apply it to internships and work-based learning experiences,” Scheffler says. Scheffler has matched 8 students with internships, where the vocabulary they learned from in-class exercises has been instrumental to their success.

Her students are also positively impacted in other ways. They have been able to start a student-driven enterprise selling coffee at their school to take their learning outside the classroom. Furthermore, the Individualized Education Program team can all work together using Project Discovery. This means that students’ physical, occupational, and speech therapy can be integrated into what they are learning.

Scheffler is in her fifth year of teaching in the Functional Moderate to Severe Program. She is passionate about her students’ success as they transition out of high school and into the community. She loves to see her students’ excitement as they gain employment skills. She is also a wife, mom of two boys, and a dog mom!

CASE endorses products that have proven to be effective in teaching students with special needs and strives to enhance the worth, dignity, potential, and uniqueness of every individual in society.

The Gary Bates Memorial Award was created by Education Associates to commemorate the work of the late Gary Bates, who served as a Sales Representative for 20 years. Each year, applicants are invited to nominate themselves or someone else who has used Education Associates’ Project Discovery or Achieve Life Skills curricula to make a significant, positive impact in students’ lives and in the community.

Education Associates is the developer of Project Discovery, the leading comprehensive career education, job preparation and life skills programs for all learners, including those with special needs. Education Associates empowers educators and workforce development leaders to help all students realize their potential. Education Associates believes everyone can become "Job Ready and Life Ready" to live the vibrant, independent lives they deserve. To learn more, visit http://educationassociates.com.
